Question

Name two gases that dissolve in water to some extent.

Open in App
Solution

Solubility:

  1. Solubility refers to the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a known quantity of solvent at a given temperature.
  2. Water does not dissolve all gases. The type of the interaction between the molecules of water and the gas determines whether or not the gas is soluble in water, and the amount of gas soluble in water is determined by physical factors such as water temperature.
  3. Because water is a polar molecule, gases with a polar nature are more soluble in water than gases with a non-polar nature.
  4. When it comes to water-soluble gases, carbon dioxide and oxygen are the most commonly used gases. Water molecules are attracted to the polar Carbon and Oxygen bond in carbon dioxide. As a result, it dissolves in water.
  5. Despite the fact that oxygen lacks a polar link like carbon dioxide, it is not fully non-polar. It has the potential to be polarised. As a result, oxygen is soluble in water.

Therefore, Oxygen and Carbon dioxide can dissolve in water to some extent.
