Solution

Metals and their reactivity

  1. X reacts with cold water, Hence X is an Alkali metal.
  2. Alkali metal always reacts with Cold water giving Hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide.
  3. Reaction involved: 2Na(s)Sodium+2H2O(aq)Water2NaOH(aq)SodiumHydroxide+H2(g)Dihydrogen
  4. Y reacts with Hot water, hence it is Magnesium.
  5. Magnesium reacts with Hot water giving Magnesium Hydroxide and Dihydrogen.
  6. Reaction involved: Mg(s)Magnesium+2H2O(aq)WaterMg(OH)2(aq)MagnesiumHydroxide+H2(g)Dihydrogen
  7. Z reacts with Steam only, Hence it is Iron.
  8. Iron reacts with steam to form Ferrous oxide and dihydrogen.
  9. Reaction involved: 3Fe(s)Iron+4H2O(aq)WaterFe3O4(s)FerrousOxide+4H2(g)dihydrogen
  10. Calcium is placed at top of the reactivity series because of high ionization energy followed by Magnesium then Iron.
  11. Hence, the order of reactivity: Fe<Mg<Ca

Therefore, the metals X,Y and Z is Sodium, Magnesium and Calcium and order of reactivity is Fe<Mg<Ca.
