Solution

The Oxyhydrogen flame used for welding and cutting metals:

  • Oxy-hydrogen is a mixture of Hydrogen and Oxygen gases which is also known as ‘Knall-gas’ and is obtained by either electrolysis or combustion.
  • As both of the gases are combustible in nature, it increases the rate of combustion.
  • Hydrogen gas gets readily burns in Oxygen or air with the formation of water, in which the flame produced is mostly neutral in nature and it helps in increasing the temperature to around 2800 degrees Celsius.
  • At this temperature itself, metal tends to melt very easily, which explains the reason why the Oxy-hydrogen is generally used for cutting and melting metal.

Hence, the reason why Oxyhydrogen flame is used for welding and cutting metals has been explained above.
