Question

Paheli took a wire of length 10 cm. Boojho took a wire of 5 cm of the same material and thickness. Both of them connected the wires as shown in the circuit given in Figure. The current flowing in both circuits is the same. Will, the heat produced be the same if the wires taken by them are of equal lengths but of different thicknesses? Explain.

Solution

Electric circuit

  1. Electric circuits are closed-loop or route systems that consist of a network of electrical components through which electrons can travel. This path is created with electrical lines and is powered by a source such as a battery.
  2. The source is the point where electrons begin to flow, and the return is the point where electrons depart from the electrical circuit.
  3. The amount of heat produced in a wire depends on its material, length, and thickness.
  4. The amount of heat produced in the wire is: H=I2R[whereH=heat,I=current,R=resistance]
  5. As we know R=ρLA[L=length,A=area]
  6. ρ is the resistivity of the material and depends upon the nature of the material.
  7. Therefore we can say that the amount of heat produced in a wire depends upon the thickness of the wire.

Hence, no, the heat produced cannot be the same if the wires taken by them are of equal lengths but of different thicknesses because the thickness of the wire decides the amount of heat produced by the wire.
