Rachel, an engineering student, was asked to make a model shaped like a cylinder with two cones attached at its two ends by using a thin aluminum sheet. The diameter of the model is 3cm and its length is 12cm. If each cone has a height of 2cm, find the volume of air contained in the model that Rachel made. (Assume the outer and inner dimensions of the model to be nearly the same.)

Let height of cylinder is H, height of cone h, radius of both cone and cylinder r

Given

Height of cylinder (H) =124=8cm

Radius (r)=1.5cm

Height of cone (h)=2cm

We have to find out the volume of air contained in the model that Rachel made

Total Volume = Volume of two cones + Volume of cylinder

=13πr2h+13πr2h+πr2H=23πr2h+πr2H=πr2[23h+H]

Taking π=227

Volume=227×32×32[23×2+8]=22×3×37×2×2×283=66cm3

Hence the volume of solid is 66cm3
