Question

Some of the following statements are incorrect. Find the incorrect statements and correct them.

(a)The property of metals by virtue of which they can be drawn into wires is called ductility.

(b) Metals are a good conductor of electricity but a poor conductor of heat.

(c) Articles made of metals produce a ringing sound when struck hard.

(d)Oxides of non-metals and metals are acidic in nature.

(e) A less reactive metal replaces a more reactive metal from its salt solution in water.

Solution

Identifying the incorrect statements:

(b). Metals are good conductors of electricity but they are poor conductors of heat

  • Solid material with a good electrical and thermal conductivity that is often hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile is considered a metal.
  • Metals are particularly good heat conductors because their particles are densely packed, allowing vibrations to be transmitted fast.

Correct statement: Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

(d). Oxides of non-metal and metals are acidic in nature

  • Non-metals and metals are reactive toward oxygen. Oxides are formed when metals and nonmetals combine with oxygen
  • Metal oxides are basic in nature because they react with water to generate bases. Salt and water are generated when acids react with metal oxides, hence, they neutralize acids.
  • Non-metallic oxides are typically acidic in nature. This is due to the fact that when they react with water, they produce an acidic solution.

Correct statement: Oxides of non-metal are acidic in nature while oxides of metals are basic in nature.

(e). A less reactive metal replaces a more reactive metal from its salt solution in water.

  • A displacement reaction occurs when a metal is placed in a salt solution.
  • Only a metal placed above it in the reactivity series can displace another metal from a complex. When a more reactive metal (one that generates positive ions more quickly) displaces a less reactive metal from a combination, it is called a displacement reaction.

Correct statement: A more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution in water.
