The atomic mass of silver found in nature is Ar(Ag)=107.983. This silver is made of 107Ag and 109Ag Isotopes. Calculate the proportion of the mass of 107Ag isotope which is in natural silver atoms.

If the fractions of 107Ag and 109Ag are x and y, respectively,

Then,

(107×x)+(109×y)=107.983.......(1)x+y=1.......(2)x=(1y)

Substituting the value of x in equation (1),

107(1y)+109y=107.983107107y+109y=107.9832y=107.9831072y=0.983y=0.4915(1)x=10.4915=0.5085

Writing in percentage,

Ag107=50.85%Ag109=49.15%

Hence, the proportion of the mass of 107Ag isotope which is in natural silver atoms is 50.85 %.
