Solution
The correct option is B
Union of states
The correct answer is option (B) – Union of States.
As per Article 1 of the Constitution of India, India is declared to be a Union of States. India is a Union of states because they are an indestructible part of India and they cannot secede from India. Article 1 defines the name and territory of India.
Article 1 of the Constitution says the territory of India shall comprise the territories of the states, union territories specified in the first schedule and such other territories as may be acquired.
To make it explicit that India was a federation of states, the term ‘Union of States’ was used. The federation was not the result of agreement between states but rather an indestructible unit.
As per the Constitution, the Parliament has the power to change the name of any state, change the boundaries of any state, reduce or increase the area of any state, separate a state into two or more states, unite two or more states.
Draft of the Article 1 was debated on 15th November 1948, 17th November 1948, 17th September 1949, and 18th September 1949.
