Question

The current gain in the common emitter amplifier is 59. If the emitter current is 6.0mA, find, (i) base current (ii) collector current.

Solution

Step 1. Given data:

For a common emitter amplifier,

Current gain in CE amplifier β=59

Emitter current Ie=6.0mA

Let Ic= Collector current

Ib= Base current

Step 2. Formula used:

Current gain in CE amplifier β=Ic-Ib/Ib=IcIb-1

or Ib=Ic1+β

Also current gain in CB amplifier α=β1+β and Ic=αIe

Step 3. Calculations:

Because current gain α=β1+β=5960

α=IcIeIc=αIeIc=5960×6=5.9mA

Now base current Ib=Ic1+β=5.91+59=0.1mA

Hence, the base current is 0.1mA and the collector current is 5.9mA.
