Question

The lengths of 62 leaves of a plant are measured in millimetres and the data is represented in the following table. Draw a histogram to represent the data above.

Length (in mm)Number of leaves
118-1268
127-13510
136-14412
145-15317
154-1627
163-1715
172-1803

Solution

Step 1: Calculate the frequency distribution

Given, that the length of 62 leaves of a plant measured in millimeters

The table represents the length of leaves and the number of leaves

We have to draw a histogram for the given data.

The given frequency distribution is in the inclusive form.

On converting to exclusive form,

Now, consider the classes 118-126and127-135

The lower limit of 127-135is127.

The upper limit of 118-126is126.

Half the difference between the lower and upper limit

=(127-126)2=0.5

Thus, we subtract 0.5 from each lower limit and add 0.5 to each upper limit.

Step 2: Construct the table for continuous grouped frequency distribution

The table for continuous grouped frequency distribution becomes,

Length (in mm)Number of leaves
117.5-126.58
126.5-135.510
135.5-144.512
144.5-153.517
153.5-162.57
162.5-171.55
171.5-180.53

Thus, the given data becomes in the exclusive form.
Step 3: Plot the histogram for the given table of data

Along the horizontal axis, we represent the class intervals of length on some suitable scale.
The corresponding frequencies of the number of leaves are represented along the Y-axis on a suitable scale.
The given intervals start with 117.5-126.5

It means that there is some break (≈) indicated near the origin to signify the graph is drawn with a scale beginning at 117.5

Hence, a histogram for the class interval of length and the corresponding frequencies of the number of leaves of a plant with 62leaves is mentioned above
