Question

The magnetic field in a traveling electromagnetic wave has a peak value of 20nT. What is the peak value of electric field strength?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1; Given data.

The peak value of the magnetic field in the electromagnetic wave is (B0)=20nT=20×10-9T

Assume that the peak value of the electric field is E0

Step 2: Finding the peak value of the electric field.

The relation between E0 and B0 is

E0=cB0

where E0 is the electric field

B0 is the magnetic field

c is the velocity of light in free space.

Substituting the values in the above equation,

E0=3×108×20×109E0=6V/m

Hence, the peak value of the electric field is 6V/m
