Solution

Answer: The correct answer is option (B) – the number of persons added each year.

Population Growth

  • During a specific period of time (for example ten years), the change in the number of inhabitants of a territory or a country is referred to as Population growth.
  • Such a change in population growth can be expressed in terms of per year change in percentage, and in absolute numbers.
  • The magnitude of population increase means the absolute number of people added in a decade or each year.
  • For example, if the population in 2001 is subtracted from the population in 2011, then we get the absolute increase in population.
  • The major components of Population Growth are Birth Rates, Death Rates, and Migration.
  • The movement of people across different territories and regions is known as Migration.
  • Migration can take place between different countries (international) or within the country (internal).
  • The size of the population is not changed by internal migration.
  • There has been a steady increase in population percentage in towns and cities due to migration.
  • In just 1 decade from 1991 to 2001, the number of cities which had a million plus population increased from 25 to 35.
  • Number of live births per thousand persons in a year is known as the birth rate.
  • In India, the death rate was always lower than the birth rate, hence birth rate is one of the major components of population growth rate in India.
  • Post 1981, it was observed that there was a decline in the rate of population growth.
  • There was a sharp decline in birth rates, post 1981.
  • There was a population explosion in India during the period of 1951 to 1981.
  • In India, the period of steady population growth refers to the time period from 1921 to 1951. This was due to lower mortality rate and improvements made in the sanitation and health sector.
