Question

What is the most commonly used semiconductor material?

Open in App
Solution

Semiconductors: Semiconductors are materials with resistance levels between those of a conductor and an insulator.

  1. The most commonly used semiconductor materials are as listed here silicon, gallium arsenide, and germanium.
  2. Out of the three listed above, germanium was the earliest semiconductor material that is mostly used.
  3. The energy gap in Germanium is 0.71eV which is less as compared to other semiconductors.
  4. The number of charge carriers per unit volume is 2.4×1013percm3in Germanium.

Thus, Germanium is more suitable to use as a semiconductor material.
