Question

Name the pyrimidine bases present in DNA.

Open in App
Solution

Bases in DNA:

  1. The nitrogenous bases are of two types: Purines and Pyrimidines.
  2. Purines are bases having two carbon-nitrogen rings while pyrimidines are bases containing one carbon-nitrogen ring.
  3. DNA has four types of nitrogenous bases: Adenine, Guanine, Thymine, and Cytosine.
  4. Adenine and guanine are purines while thymine and cytosine are pyrimidines.
  5. Two bases link by a hydrogen bond and form base pairs.
  6. Base pairs in DNA are Adenine - Thymine, and Guanine - Cytosine.

Thus, the pyrimidine bases present in DNA are thymine and cytosine.
