Question

A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. Describe an activity and draw the diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named. Also, write a chemical equation of the reaction involved.

Solution

Explanation

  1. The evolved gas is Carbon dioxide (CO2), while salt "X" is Sodium ethanoate (CH3COONa).
  2. When sodium hydrogen carbonate and ethanoic acid combine, sodium ethanoate is created along with carbon dioxide gas.
  3. CH3COOH+NaHCO3CH3COONa+H2O+CO2

Acitvity:

  1. Construct the experiment as depicted in the illustration.
  2. Ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) should be placed in a test tube.
  3. To the acid, add Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3).
  4. Place a cork over the test tube's mouth to seal it, then join a delivery tube to it.
  5. Put lime water in a different test tube and connect it to the delivery tube's other end.
  6. The lime water will change to a milky colour, as you can see.
  7. This demonstrates that Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the evolved gas.
