Solution

Unit cell

  • The smallest repeating component of a crystal lattice is called a unit cell.
  • Unit cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
  • For example, the cubic crystal structure comprises three different unit cells: simple cubic, face-centred cubic, and body-centred cubic.

Centred unit cell

  • When the component particles occupy positions other than those at the corners is known as a centred unit cell.
  • Face-centered and body-centred belong to centred unit cells.
  • Body-centred: A body centre unit cell is one in which the component particle is located in the centre of the body.
  • Face centred: When the component particle is located in the centre of each face, it is referred to as a face centre unit cell.
