Question

Under what conditions gases can be liquefied?

Open in App
Solution

Liquefaction of gas:

  • It is a physical process in which a gaseous state of substance changes to a liquid state.
  • As it is a physical phenomenon the chemical composition remains unchanged.

Conditions for Liquefaction of gas:

  • In gases, the intermolecular spaces are very large.
  • The two conditions necessary for the liquefaction of gas are:
  1. Increasing the pressure
  2. Decreasing the temperature
  • When gas is compressed too much, heat is produced, so it is necessary to cool it.
  • Cooling lowers the temperature of compressed gas and helps in liquefying it.

Hence, a gas can be liquefied by applying high pressure and lowering the temperature.
