Solution

Determining the fractions.

A fraction is a number that would be expressed as a quotient by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Both of which are integers inside a simple fraction.
The complex fraction has a fraction both in the numerator and the denominator. A numerator will be less than the denominator in such a proper fraction.

For instance

There are a total of 5 children.
Three out of five 35are female. So the proportion of females is three-fifths.
Two of the five 25 are male. So the proportion of boys is two-fifths.
