What are rational functions?

Open in App
Solution

Definition of a Rational function.

A rational function is the ratio of two polynomial functions where the denominator polynomial is a non-zero polynomial.

A rational function Rx is of the form Rx=PxQx Where, PxandQx are the polynomial of the type axn+bxn-1+...αx+β and x belongs to some interval of real number such that Qx0

The examples of rational functions are:

  1. R(x)=2x+5x-1,x1

Here for x=1 denominator Qx=x-1=0 thus the domain of x such that Qx0 is x-1

2. R(x)=x2+5x-6x2+2,xR

Here forQx0 ,all x, thus the domain of x such that Qx0 is x-,
