  1. Urochordata or Tunicata
  • The notochord is only present in the larval tail of Urochordata.
  • Example - Ascidia

2. Cephalochordata

  • The notochord extends from the head to the tail area and it is present throughout their lives.
  • Example - Branchiostoma

3. Vertebrata

  • During the embryonic period, the notochord is present.
  • The notochord is replaced by a cartilaginous or bony spinal column in adulthood.
  • Example - Birds, humans
