What are the classifications of matter based on physical nature?

Open in App
Solution

Matter:

  • A matter is composed of tiny particles.
  • Anything that has mass and takes up space is known as matter.

Classification of the matter:

Matter can be classified in two ways:

  • On the basis of physical nature
  • On the basis of its chemical nature

A matter can be categorized into three categories on the basis of physical nature:

Solid:

  • The particles in a solid are tightly packed due to the strong intermolecular attractions.
  • A solid has a definite shape, volume, and mass.
  • Examples of solid are books, iron, and wood.

Liquid:

  • The intermolecular attractions in liquids are weaker than in solids, thus the particles are allowed to move around freely.
  • A liquid has a fixed volume but its shape is not fixed, it usually takes the shape of a container.
  • Examples of liquids are water and alcohol.

Gas:

  • The intermolecular forces between gaseous particles are negligible.
  • A gas has no fixed volume or shape.
  • Examples of gases are Oxygen and carbon dioxide.
