Question

What are the drawbacks of Bohr's atomic model?

Open in App
Solution

Postulates of Bohr's atomic model:

  • Bohr assumed that electromagnetic radiation has dual nature which means that radiations have both wave/particle-like properties.
  • As Rutherford's model fails to explain the hypothetical results regarding the atomic spectrum of elements.
  • Thus, Bohr worked on atomic spectra by assuming quantized electronic energy levels in atoms.

Drawbacks of Bohr's atomic model:

  • He could not explain the details of the Hydrogen and Helium atomic spectrum.
  • He did not explain the splitting of spectral lines in presence of a magnetic field.
  • The intensity of spectral lines was not explained by him.
  • He could not explain the Zeeman effect i.e. splitting of spectral lines in Magnetic field as well as the Stark effect i.e. splitting of spectral lines in electric field.
