  1. Food is our body's primary source of energy and nutrients.
  2. It's made up of a variety of plant and animal-derived substances. The human body requires a variety of nutrients to function properly.
  3. Our bodies do not require all of the nutrients included in a single food item.
  4. Eating a wide variety of foods ensures that you get all of the nutrients you need in the right proportions.

Components of healthy meals:

  1. Proteins: Human body is composed mostly of proteins, and hence protein has to be included in the diet. Plant and animal proteins are used in the production of proteins. Animal proteins are mostly found in lean meat, fish, eggs, and cheese.
  2. Carbohydrates: These supply instant energy for the body to perform daily activities. The bulk of these nutrients is found in plants such as wheat, rice, maize, potatoes, peas, beans, and fruits.
  3. Fats: Fats are responsible for absorbing, storing, and transporting vitamins. They hydrate the skin and provide energy to many regions of the body.
  4. Vitamins: These are required for the production of food and energy. They also act as a cofactor in many chemical reactions.
  5. Minerals: Minerals such as iron, and phosphorous are required to perform enzymatic reactions.
