Question

What does the screening effect of inner shell electrons of the nucleus cause?

Open in App
Solution

Effect of inner shell electrons of the nucleus:

  • The electrons in the outer shell will not be exposed to the full positive charge of the nucleus (Ze) due to the presence of inner-shell electrons.
  • “The effect will be lowered due to the partial screening of positive charge on the nucleus by the inner shell electrons. This is known as the shielding of the outer shell electrons from the nucleus by the inner shell electrons.”
  • The shielding effect experienced by the outermost electrons will be greater due to the presence of more electron shells.
