Question

What is a node? What is an antinode?

Open in App
Solution

Standing wave

The superimposition of two waves forms standing waves. The superimposing waves have the same frequency, polarization, and amplitude.

  1. The number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time is called as frequency.
  2. Geometrical orientation of oscillation is known as polarization.
  3. Maximum displacement with respect to mean position is called as amplitude.

Explanation

Node and antinodes describe the position of a point on a standing wave.

  1. Nodes are the points that have no displacement from the equilibrium position. Amplitude is minimum at nodes
  2. Antinodes are points of maximum displacements (at crests and toughs) from the mean position. Amplitude is maximum at antinodes.
