What is a supermoon?
When a full Moon occurs at the closest point to Earth during its orbit, it appears larger and brighter, becoming what is commonly known as a ‘supermoon’.As a supermoon rises and sets on the horizon, it will appear even larger. This is because of the well-known ‘Moon illusion'. The closest supermoon of this century will occur on 6 December 2052.
Another measure that’s used to determine if a full moon is a supermoon is its physical distance from Earth. The exact distance cutoff varies, but we generally adhere to the idea that a full moon occurring at a distance closer than 224,000 miles (360,000 km) is considered a supermoon.
