Question

What is destructive inference and constructive inference?

Open in App
Solution

Constructive inference: Whenever two waves collide in a quiet manner that respective crests line up, this is referred to as constructive interference. The resultant wave is larger in amplitude.

Example: If somehow the speakers would be in a similar location, constructive interference would occur at all places directly next to the loudspeaker.

Destructive inference: The peak of one wave hits the trough of another in destructive interference, resulting in a decreased overall amplitude.

Example: Destructive interference occurs whenever the speakers have been separated approximately half a wavelength.
