What is even and odd function?

Open in App
Solution

Even and odd function:

  • Even function: function,f(x) is said to be even if it satisfies the conditionf(x)=f(-x). For example, the trigonometric function f(x)=cosxis an even function.

Other examples of even functions are x2,x4,x6,x12.. etc.

  • Odd function: A function,f(x) is said to be odd if it satisfies the conditionf(-x)=-f(x). For example, the trigonometric function f(x)=sinxis odd.

Other examples of an odd function are x,x3,x5,x45..etc.

Thus, a functionf(x) is said to be even if it satisfies the conditionf(x)=f(-x), and a functionf(x) is said to be odd if it satisfies the conditionf(-x)=-f(x).
