An important element in every constitution is power-sharing. Power-sharing means that various parts of society have an optimal balance. There should be some sort of power-sharing between each and every state.

Horizontal distribution of power

It is the sharing of power among the different organs of government. Power is shared among different organs of government, such as the legislature, executive and judiciary. This is called horizontal distribution of power because it allows different organs of government placed at the same level to exercise different powers. Such separation ensures that none of the organs can exercise unlimited power. Each organ checks the others. This arrangement is called a system of checks and balances.

The advantages of power-sharing

The following are advantages of power-sharing are listed below

  • The shaping of public policies will have opinions from all.
  • No single community can take the decision unilaterally.
  • Stability in political order becomes easy.
  • The conflicts between different social groups become less.
