Water Divide

  • The river system of an area is described by the term drainage.
  • The main river is formed by coming together of the small streams and rivers flowing from different directions.
  • This river ultimately drains into the ocean, sea or lake.
  • The drainage basin of a river is the area drained by a single river system.
  • Two drainage basins are usually separated by elevated areas such as an upland or a mountain.
  • Such an upland is known as a water divide.
  • The Ganga river and Indus river systems are divided by a water divide and Ambala is situated on this water divide.

Drainage Pattern

  • Certain patterns are formed within a drainage basin by the streams.
  • The formation of drainage patterns is dependent on climatic conditions of the area, underlying rock structure and depends on the slope of the land.
  • The different drainage patterns are radial patterns, rectangular patterns, trellis pattern and dendritic patterns.
