Solution
Water Divide
The river system of an area is described by the term drainage.
The main river is formed by coming together of the small streams and rivers flowing from different directions.
This river ultimately drains into the ocean, sea or lake.
The drainage basin of a river is the area drained by a single river system.
Two drainage basins are usually separated by elevated areas such as an upland or a mountain.
Such an
upland
is known as a
water divide
.
The Ganga river and Indus river systems are divided by a water divide and Ambala is situated on this water divide.
Drainage Pattern
Certain patterns are formed within a drainage basin by the streams.
The formation of drainage patterns is dependent on climatic conditions of the area, underlying rock structure and depends on the slope of the land.
The different drainage patterns are radial patterns, rectangular patterns, trellis pattern and dendritic patterns.
