Pi-acid ligand

  • Ligands that are able to accept electron density from the metal atom into its own empty π or π* orbital are known as pi-acid orπ -acceptor ligands.
  • The intensity of crystal field splitting energy is increased by this form of interaction and is thus known as strong field ligands

Example of pi-acid ligand

  • Carbon monoxide (CO) is an example of a pi-acid ligand.
  • It is a good π-acceptor ligand due to the empty π* orbital of carbon monoxide(CO) .
  • Carbon monoxide(CO) accepts electron density from the metal d-orbital to its empty π* orbital.
  • The electronic configuration of (CO) by molecular orbital diagram is given as (σ1s)2(σ1s)2(σ2s)2(σ2s)2(π2px)2(π2py)2(σ2pz)2.
  • An example of π– acid ligand complex is tetra carbonyl nickel Ni(CO)4.
