Question

What is pollen pistil interaction? How it is mediated?

Open in App
Solution

Pollen-pistil interaction:

It is an event that occurs from the time the pollen is deposited on the stigma to the time the pollen tube enters the ovule.

Process of pollen-pistil interaction:

  1. When a pollen grain lands on the stigma, the chemical components of both the pollen and stigma interact with each other which helps in the recognition of compatible pollen.
  2. The compatible pollen absorbs water and nutrition from the surface of the stigma.
  3. The sugary secretions from the stigma stimulate pollen germination.
  4. The pollen germinates and produces the pollen tube.
  5. The pollen tube grows into the style up to the ovule to deposit the male gametes.
