Respiration:

  1. The transfer of oxygen from the outside environment to cells within tissues, as well as the removal of carbon dioxide in the opposite way, is referred to as respiration.
  2. It is a biological reaction that takes place within the cells of living organisms.
  3. The energy (ATP-Adenosine triphosphate) is created during this process by the breakdown of glucose, which is then utilized by cells to execute various activities.

Types of respiration:

There are two types of respiration aerobic and anaerobic respiration:

i) Aerobic respiration:

  1. In this type, respiration is carried out in presence of oxygen.
  2. It is seen in all plants and higher animals including humans.

ii) Anaerobic respiration:

  1. Anaerobic respiration is a type of respiration that does not require oxygen.
  2. Bacteria and yeast have this mode of respiration.
