Question

What is the correct Lewis dot structure for BeF2 molecule?

Open in App
Solution

Lewis dot structure

  • A Lewis Structure is a very simplified representation of the valence shell electrons in a molecule. Electrons are shown as "dots" or for bonding electrons as a line between the two atoms.
  • The goal is to obtain the "best" electron configuration, i.e. the octet rule and formal charges need to be satisfied.

Example

  • The Lewis dot structure of BeF2 is as follows:
Lewis dot structure for BeF2 molecule
  • Beryllium is bonded with two fluorine atoms by single bonds.
  • Lone pairs of electrons are present on both fluorine atoms and the structure is linear.
