Question

What is the derivative of cot-1(x)?

Open in App
Solution

Determine the derivative of cot-1(x).

Let us assume
y=cot-1xcoty=x..................(i)

Differentiate Implicitly
-cosec2ydydx=1dydx=-1cosec2y
By trigonometric identity, we know that cosec2θ=1+cot2θ using the identity in the above equation we get,

dydx=-11+cot2y=-11+x2fromequation..(I)
Hence, the derivative of cot-1x is "-11+x2".
