What is the difference between Glycogenesis and Glycogenolysis?
Glycogenesis:
The process of the production of glycogen from glucose is termed glycogenesis.
Glycogenolysis:that
The metabolic degradation of glycogen to glucose is termed glycogenolysis.
S.no | Glycogenesis | Glycogenolysis |
1. | The process takes place in the cells of muscle and liver. | The process takes place in the cells of the liver and muscle in reaction to neural and hormonal signals |
2. | There is a requirement of 1 ATP (adenosine triphosphate) for any unit of glucose supplemented into the polymeric branched composition of glycogen at the time of glycogen synthesis. | It generates much more energy. |
3. | Glycogenesis decreases the blood sugar level to normal. | Glycogenolysis increases the blood sugar level. |
4. | Inhibited by glucagon and epinephrine | Inhibited by insulin |
5. | Glycogen synthase is the key enzyme which is phosphorylated in active form. | Glycogen phosphorylase is the key enzyme that is phosphorylated in its active form. |
