Question

What is the dimensional formula of escape velocity?

Open in App
Solution

Escape velocity:

The lowest velocity required for a moving body is just to leave the gravitational field of such a celestial body and go outward towards space.

Formula:

Ve=2MGr

Here,

Ve is the escape velocity.

M is the mass of the earth (kg).

r is the distance to the center of the earth (meters).

G is a universal gravitational constant.

Dimensional formula:

We know,

Dimensional formula of Universal gravitational constant: [M-1L3T-2]

Dimensional formula of distance to the center of the earth: [M0L1T0]

Dimensional formula of mass of the earth: [M1L0T0]

By substituting the formula in the above equation,

Ve=[M-1+1L3+0T-2+0][M0L1T0]=[M0L3T-2][M0L1T0]

By using the law of algorithm axay=ax-y,

Ve=[M0-0L3-1T-2-0]=[M0L2T-2]

By taking the square root, we get

Ve=[M0L1T-1]

Therefore, the dimensional formula of escape velocity will be [M0L1T-1].
