Question

What is the shortest wavelength in the Paschen series of spectral lines?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Formula for the calculation of wavelength

1λ=R1n12-1n22

Here, λ is the wavelength

R is Rydberg constant,

n1=1,2........ , and n2= n1+1,.n1+2……

The first five series of lines that correspond to n1are known as the Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, Bracket, and Pfund series, respectively.

Step 2: Calculating the shortest wavelength for paschen series

For the Paschen series,

n1=3

n2=

R=109,677cm-1.

1λ=109,677cm-1132-11λ=109,677cm-19λ=9109,677cm-1λ=8.205×10-5cm

Hence, the shortest wavelength is 8.205×10-5cm.
