Question

What is the standard deviation?

Open in App
Solution

Standard deviation.

Variance is a measure of the dispersion of the data set from the mean The variance is written as σ2and is given by

σ2=1nxi-x2

Where x1,x2.....xn are n observations andx is the mean of the given observations

Standard Deviation:

The standard deviation is also a measure of the dispersion from the mean calculated as follows:

Standarddeviation=varianceStandarddeviation=σ2Standarddeviation=σ

And given by

σ=σ2=1nxi-x2

Hence, the standard deviation (or σ) is a measure of how widely distributed the data is in reference to the mean which is given byσ=σ2=1nxi-x2.
