What Role Do Bacteriophages Play in Carbon Cycle?

Bacteriophages are found in the oceans in abundance. The phages also known as Pelagiphages infect the SAR11 bacteria and kill them. The SAR11 bacteria convert the carbon molecules into carbon dioxide, thereby, influencing the amount of atmospheric carbon. Pelagiphages keep a check on the population of SAR11 bacteria and control the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
