Question

What role do bacteriophages play in the carbon cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Carbon cycle:

It is a biogeochemical cycle, which involves the exchange of carbon atoms between the organisms of the earth and the atmosphere.

The role of Bacteriophages in the carbon cycle:

  1. There is a bacteria called SAR11 and it can convert the carbon molecule to carbon dioxide.
  2. Thus it increases the amount of carbon dioxide in nature.
  3. The bacteriophage known as Pelagiphages can infect the SAR11 and kills it.
  4. Thus Pelagiphages control the population of bacteria and maintain the carbon dioxide quantity in the atmosphere.
