Question

What happens when the current is switched ‘on’ in a room heater?

Open in App
Solution

Heating effect of electricity

  1. When electricity flows through a resistor, the resistor tries to resist the flow of the electrons.
  2. As a result, the electrons collide with the outer surface of the resistors, and due to the conversion of the kinetic energy to heat energy, the resistor gets heated.
  3. The room heater also works using the same principle.
  4. The heat generated in the resistor of the room heater, gets transferred by the conduction and convention process in the room.
  5. As a result, the room gets heated up.
