Question

When an impurity is added to a liquid, its surface tension

Open in App
Solution

Surface tension when an impurity is added to a liquid:

  1. The presence of contaminants on the fluid's surface or dissolving in it affects its surface tension. Completely soluble compounds raise water's surface tension, although soluble form compounds lower water's surface tension.
  2. The surface tension of even a liquid reduces as the temperature rises. A liquid's surface tension reaches zero at its boiling point but instead disappears at the critical temperature.
  3. Increases, when the impurity added, is highly soluble in water. Decreases when the impurity is not completely soluble and remains suspended in the liquid.

When an impurity is added to a liquid, its surface tension may increase or decrease depending on impurities.
