a) Placenta

Location:

  1. The placenta is placed within the ovary's ovarian cavity.
  2. Each ovary bears one or more ovules attached to a flattened, cushion-like placenta.

Function:

Its purpose is to connect the ovary walls with the flower, as well as to deliver nutrition to the developing embryo.

b) Thalamus

Location:

  1. It is also called a receptacle.
  2. It is located at the tip of a flower stalk ( pedicel).
  3. It is the swollen end of the flower stalk.

Function:

  1. It bears flower parts.
  2. The thalamus also plays a role in fruit production in select species such as apple, strawberry, and cashew.

c) Anther

Location:

It is located inside the stamen ( male reproductive organ)

Function:

Anther produces pollen grains ( male gametophyte) for pollination.

d) Stigma

Location:

  1. The stigma, style, and ovary are the three sections of a carpel.
  2. The stigma is usually found at the very tip of the style.

Function:

It is the pollen grain's receptive surface.

e) Ovary

Location:

  1. The stigma, style, and ovary are the three sections of a carpel.
  2. The ovary is located at the base of the carpel.

Function:

  1. It prepares the ovules for fertilization, ovules develop into seeds upon fertilization.
  2. The ovary itself will mature into a fruit.
