The Digboi Refinery was set up at Digboi in 1901 by Assam Oil Company Ltd is the first oil refinery established in India. This refinery is known as the birthplace of the oil industry in India. The commission of this refinery started on 11 December 1901. It stands as the first and oldest oil refinery in entire Asia continent. The oil was found accidentally in the Digbol district in 1867 while laying railway line. In 1889 the process of digging of oil started and refinery was established in 1901.

Undertaken by IOCL

The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) took over the refinery and marketing management of Assam Oil Company Limited with effect from 1981 and established a separate division. Bot refining and marketing operations were under the shelter of this division. The refinery at Digboi had initiated with the capacity of 0.50 million tonnes per year. The refining capacity of the refinery gradually increased to 0.65 million tonnes per year by modernization and globalisation of the refinery in July, 1996.
