Question

Which gas is adsorbed in minimum amount by the activated charcoal?

Open in App
Solution

Adsorption

  • One chemical gathers in increasing concentrations on the surfaces of another is called adsorption.
  • The particles are more attracted to each other, one and only when the gas has a higher critical temperature.
  • The rate of gas adsorbed gets increased on the surface of activated charcoal.
  • The gas that is hard to liquefy which it has a low critical temperature is adsorbed in a smaller amount, and vice versa.

Minimum adsorption by activated charcoal:

  • Because hydrogen has a minimal critical temperature of (-240°C), it is adsorbed in the smallest quantity.
  • For H2, the molecular weight isH2=1×2=2.
  • Thus, Hydrogen will have minimum amount of adsorption by activated charcoal.
