Volcano

  • A volcano is a place where gases, ashes and/or molten rock material – lava – escape to the ground.
  • A volcano is called an active volcano if the materials mentioned are being released or have been released out in the recent past
  • The material that reaches the ground includes lava flows,ash,dust, pyroclastic debris, volcanic bombs, and gases such as sulphur compounds,nitrogen compounds, and minor amounts of argon, hydrogen,and chlorine.

Volcano – Classification

Volcanoes are classified on the basis of form developed at the surface and nature of eruption.

Major types of volcanoes are:

  • Shield Volcanoes
  • Composite Volcanoes
  • Mid-Ocean Ridge Volcanoes
  • Caldera

Caldera

  • The most explosive type of volcano is the Caldera.
  • Rather than building any tall structure, they tend to collapse on themselves, such is the explosive nature of Caldera.

Mid-Ocean Ridge Volcanoes

  • These volcanoes occur in the oceanic areas.
  • There is a system of mid-ocean ridges more than 70,000 km long that stretches through all the ocean basins.

Composite Volcanoes

  • The eruptions of composite volcanoes are characterized by more viscous and cooler lavas than Basalt.
  • Large quantities of ashes and pyroclastic material are also released along with lava when there is eruption of composite volcanoes.

Shield Volcanoes

  • The largest of all the volcanoes on the earth are the shield volcanoes, barring basalt flows.
  • The most famous examples are the Hawaiian volcanoes.

Earthquake

  • Earthquakes are caused due to the release of energy, which generates waves that travel in all directions.
  • To understand in simple terms it is the shaking of the earth.
  • A fault is a sharp break in the crustal rocks. The release of energy occurs along a fault.
  • Hypocentre is the point where the energy is released. It is also called the focus of an earthquake.
  • Epicentre is the point on the surface nearest to the hypocentre or focus.
  • Seismographs are instruments used to measure the intensity of earthquakes.
  • Earthquake waves are basically of two types — surface waves and body waves.
  • A new set of waves called surface waves are generated when body waves interact with the surface rocks.
  • Due to the release of energy, the waves get generated at the hypocentre or focus and move in all directions travelling through the body of the earth, these waves are called body waves.

Earthquakes – Types

There are three different types of earthquakes:

Tectonic Earthquake:

  • These are generated due to sliding of rocks along a fault plane.
  • This is the most common type of Earthquake.

Reservoir Induced Earthquakes:

  • These are the types of earthquakes which occur in areas having large reservoirs.

Volcanic Earthquake

  • These are confined to areas of active volcanoes.
  • It is a special class of tectonic earthquakes.
