Question

Which Is The best conductor Of electricity?

Open in App
Solution

Conductivity of materials

  1. Conductivity is an ability of a material to pass electricity through it. Based on the concept materials are categorized as conductors, insulators, and semiconductors.
  2. Conductors have very low electrical resistance. Most of the conductors are metals. They have a very high value of conductivity. Gold, Silver, copper, and aluminum are a few examples of good conductors.
  3. Insulators do not possess free electrons to carry a charge. These materials have the highest electrical resistance. Paper, rubber, and plastics are the best examples of insulators.
  4. The resistance of a semiconductor is low at an increased temperature whereas high at a decreased temperature. Hence they act as an insulator at absolute zero. Silicon, Germanium, Selenium, and Antimony are the best examples of semiconductors.
CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIAL BASED ON BAND GAP

Explanation

  1. Silver is the best conductor of electricity, as the metal has more free electrons to transfer electric energy.
  2. Higher the number of free electrons more efficient the metal to conduct electricity.
