Solution

The correct option is C

Refrigerator

The explanation for the correct option:

In the case of option C,

  1. A heat pump is an electrical device that is used for transferring heat from a colder region to a hotter region i.e. it absorbs heat from a cold space and releases it to a warmer one.

  1. A heat pump consists of four components- (i) a condenser, (ii) a compressor, (iii) an evaporator, and (iv) an expansion valve.
  2. A heat pump works by drawing heat from the outside air and transferring it to refrigeration coolant, which is then compressed and heated significantly. The coolant is then moved to the heat pump's indoor unit, which passes air over the hot coolant to raise its temperature to meet the thermostat's request for heat inside the house.
  3. Examples of heat pumps- air conditioners, freezers, etc.
  4. The working principle of the refrigerator is reverse to a heat pump because the refrigerator is used to cool the space and the heat pump is used to heat the space.
  5. Therefore, we can say a refrigerator is simply a heat pump that takes out heat from the inside of the refrigerator to the outside.
  6. Thus, a refrigerator is an example of a heat pump.

Hence, option (C) is correct.

The explanation for incorrect options:

In the case of option A,

  1. An evaporator is a type of component which works as a heat exchanger
  2. For example, it is used as a component in a refrigeration system for removing heat from a space that is to be cooled.
  3. So, not a suitable example of a heat pump.

In the case of option B,

  1. A double pipe heat exchanger is also a heat exchanger
  2. In which the transfer of energy takes place between two fluids that are at different temperatures(hot fluid and cold fluid).
  3. They are of two types-parallel flow heat exchanger and counter flow.
  4. So, the double pipe heat exchanger is an incorrect option.

Hence, options (A), (B), and (D) are incorrect.
