The slogan ‘do or die’ is associated with Mahatma Gandhi. This slogan came into existence during the Quit India Movement initiated by Gandhiji.

  • The slogan was officially launched by the Indian National Congress (INC) led by Mahatma Gandhi on 9 August 1942.
  • The movement gave the slogans ‘Quit India’ or ‘Bharat Chodo’. Gandhi gave the slogan to the people – ‘Do or die’.
  • In line with the Congress ideology, it was supposed to be a peaceful non-violent movement aimed at urging the British to grant India independence.
  • The Quit India Resolution was passed by the Congress Working Committee on 8 August 1942 in Bombay. Gandhi was named the movement’s leader.

The birth of the slogan Do or Die in Quit India Movement

Quit India day is celebrated on August 9 in the year 1942. The Quit India Movement was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headed by Mahatma Gandhi which was held on August 8, 1948. It was a massive protest initiated to demand an elimination and end to the British rule in India. The movement was started on August 9, 1942. Since that time, the day is celebrated as August Kranti Day/Diwas or the Quit India Day. The day is celebrated by paying tribute and homage to freedom fighters with national integration speeches and other cultural events. In this massive protest, people started yelling Do or Die to eradicate the British rule in India.

The resolution stated the provisions of the movement as:

(a) An immediate end to British rule over our country
(b) Declaration of the commitment of free India to defend itself against all sorts of imperialism and fascism
(c) Formation of a provisional and organized government of India after the British withdrawal

(d) Sanctioning and signing a civil disobedience movement against British rule
