Why are interhalogen compounds more reactive than Halogens?

Interhalogen compounds more reactive than Halogens:-

  • Interhalogen compounds are compounds that have a chemical formula of (X-X'), that is 2 different halogens.
  • On the other hand, the halogen which is of (X-X)type have 2 same halogens.
  • As a result the bond strength of the interhalogen molecule is much less than that of halogen compounds.
  • And we know that the more the bond strength is more difficult is it to break that bond, and the less reactive will be the molecule.
  • Since here interhalogen compounds have weak bond strength, the bond tends to break more easily and thus is more reactive than halogens with (X-X)type.
  • Therefore, Interhalogen compounds are more reactive than Halogens.
  • Example of interhalogen compounds:-ICl,IBr
  • Example of halogen compounds:-Cl2,Br2
